There were some gotchas! that were important to understand as they were implemented. The biggest was that for certain versions of Civil 3D, the objects were not interchangeable within a DWG file that was. For example Real DWG 2009 did not have any issues creating a file that could be read in 2007, 2008 or 2009, but if there were Civil 3D objects in the file, Real DWG 2009 with the object enablers would update the objects to Civil 3D 2009, and they were now only available to Civil 3D 2009, even though the DWG file was still considered to be interchangeable between 2007, 2008 and 2009. Civil 3D 2007 or 2008 could no longer deal with the file.

Josh, have you ever had to go through a bunch of layouts and turn off layers that showed up in a XREF after you configred your viewports? Maybe you had to do it more than once because you missed something. Then there is the new capabilities in ACAD 2008 to configure viewport layer settings independently. Think of how much easier it would be to just set up a style that has all those settings and apply it to the viewports that need to have the same settings, regard;ess of which layouot they are in. If something needs to be changed in all those viewports you would only have to modify the style and they would all be updated..no stepping though and waiting for re-gens. Far better than trying to do it with layer states. With ACAD 2008 you could also customize the linetypes and colors in addition to visibility so you could have a viewport style for Water network and one for P&P, grading, etc. Hopefully you get the idea.

I have a fire map which got 700+ devices on it and each time we add/remove a device the whole numbering system gets changed. Therefore I am looking to link the device labels in autocad with excel spreadsheet and update the spreadsheet whenever we add/remove a fire device. I would really appriciate if somebody can give me some tips :)

Donnie, thaks for sharing this post, i found it really useful. I have a problem uploading my changes to the excel table inserted in autocad to the original excel file. I tried to create a field with the area of a pline and I can upload it but when I modify the poliline and the field shows the new area, I click on update to source file and get the message:1 object(s) found.1 data link(s) could not be written out.0 data link(s) written out successfully. It happens only when the object to which the field is referred is modified after creating the field.

Help!! Please!!!My AutoCAD Revit MEP 2008 can not using the Data Links.I followed your sample. In step 4 appeared error.AutoCAD does not find the excel program. But I installed MS office. Please to help me solve this problem. Thanks you!!

I have an autocad lt 2008 drawing and I want to be able to link it to an excel spreadsheet. I want to be able to make changes on the spreadsheet so it will change the details on the auotcad drawing. Is that possible?

Actually the data link is available in autocad 2007 and possibly 06 as well, the main problem, for me anyways has been to keep my formatting for tables in autocad the same when i import a linked xcel file.

I am using AutoCAD 2008 and of course I took advantage of great new linking possibilities. I have linked number of cells (about 70 links) from single XL file to AutoCAD file. XL file is a template file with some calculations which can be used in different projects; therefore I need to create copy of this XL file and copy of AutoCAD file as well. Copy of AutoCAD file stays linked to original file (which is logical). My next step is to edit each data link and specify new source file (cell location in XL remains as in original file). By using Data Link Manager I can do this task one by one, it takes so long. Is there any better way to tell AutoCAD that new data will be linked with different file with same cell locations?Thank you for your help

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.0\ACAD-8001:409 What is 8001:409? R18.0 is the release number, for AutoCAD 2010. (AutoCAD 2011 is R18.1 and 2012 is R18.2) These digits like 8000:419 are a ProductID (8000) and a LocaleID (419). The ProductID structure is a 4-digit value. However, prior to AutoCAD 2006, the ProductID structure was only 3-digits with a single [p] value. Due to the number of products based on AutoCAD, in AutoCAD 2006 structure was changed to 4-digits. From AutoCAD 2006 forward, the structure is configured as "[n][r][pp]", where: [n] = Number representing AutoCAD base release (see below) [r] = Release number within AutoCAD base, reset to zero for every new n [pp] = Product based on AutoCAD (see below) ProductID Assignments (Assigned [n] Values)6 = AutoCAD 20235 = AutoCAD 20224 = AutoCAD 20213 = AutoCAD 20202 = AutoCAD 20191 = AutoCAD 20180 = AutoCAD 2017F = AutoCAD 2016E = AutoCAD 2015D = AutoCAD 2014B = AutoCAD 2013 A = AutoCAD 2012 9 = AutoCAD 2011 8 = AutoCAD 2010 7 = AutoCAD 2009 6 = AutoCAD 2008 5 = AutoCAD 2007 4 = AutoCAD 2006 3 = AutoCAD 2005 2 = AutoCAD 2004 1 = AutoCAD 2002 The LocaleID structure is a 4-character hex representation of the product's locale / language.
