With a new Kirby-friendly narrative and the ability to ride stars as well as collecting them, this is one Super Mario 64 ROM hack that will make you fall in love with the original levels all over again.
Kaze Emanuar is one of the most well-known SM64 ROM hackers. He has notably made Super Mario 64: Last Impact (his major hack), and a number of meme and ASM hacks. He is also well known for making many custom objects and hacking tools.

It was released on September 30th, 2016 at 8:00AM MDT. It contains 130 stars, 12 power-ups, many new bosses and a large variety of completely new levels.
In this hack, Mario only has 6 health instead of the normal 8 and a separate gauge for air underwater. This hack presents many things that weren't in previous hacks or the original game, including new power-ups, custom music and objects, and unique boss fights.

It contains 48 stars over 17 courses. Like in The Princess's Secret Slide from Super Mario 64, you get stars by completing a course within a certain time.
Book of Mario (commonly referred as Book of Mario 64 to discern it from the series' name) is a text hack of Paper Mario 64, the prequel to Book of Mario: Thousands of Doors. It was first announced on April 1, 2019.
Since the video was uploaded on April Fools Day, many viewers were confused about whatever the project was real or just a joke, especially considering it took a whole year for Fatguy to make Thousands of Doors. Fatguy posted a video the following day, confirming that the hack was real and that the whole script would be translated, unlike its predecessor.
Next, we see a Gossip of a Fish (here named Gum), who people want to be called a "small apple seed". It's also revealed that he's the smallest potato. The following shot is of the Newspaper map, focusing on Dry and Dry and its snarky narration ("As the name suggests, it's dry."). We have a small scene of a Bandit Gossip, with Goverman claiming that he's a bad boy.
Developed by ROM hacking personality BroDute and many collaborators, the Star Revenge series is one of the most prolific hack series in existence. Counting over six main releases and a ton of remakes.

Of course, sometimes it's nice to be shaken out of your complacency, and that's where Super Mario 64: Chaos Edition comes in. This ROM hack, created by MOD maker Kaze Emanuar, essentially drops in random GameShark codes while you play, resulting in an unpredictable and, at times, terrifying experience. Check out the video below to see this amazing hack in action, and before you alert the FBI to my nefarious actions, keep in mind I own the original game in several formats. Remember, kids: Winners don't use ROMs.
Emulators use hacks to get games to run as they would on the console they are emulating and it shows. The few emulators that try to make a true hardware equivalent take a lot of PC Power, even recommending users have Intel only PC with i5 or i7. Sound has been particularly hard to get right. There has also never been a reliable N64 emulator. Yes, some of the simpler games run but most don't work as they should. And to top it off, some games had special chips in the cartridge to process code that the system could not. That means that every game cannot be emulated like every other game 100%. Yes, Nintendo has the inside scoop on how to emulate these conditions but it still requires coding. If I buy a VC game, I want it to run as it would, 100% on the system it ran on.
